Meryl Streep coming to Australia for Mamma Mia

May 12, 2008 12:00am

THE metal detectors at Sydney Airport will be on red alert and the ruby rug for visiting stars due for an extra special dry-clean - the golden girl of the Oscars, Meryl Streep, is set to touch down.

We can exclusively reveal the big-screen actress is jetting her way to Sydney as part of a star-studded press tour for Mamma Mia! the movie.

Streep will join co-stars Pierce Brosnan and Amanda Seyfried to hit town on July 8, before heading south for a gala premiere in Melbourne the following night. (Stay tuned for details on how you can be on the VIP guest list).

The whistlestop visit is scheduled to be the final stop of an amazing world tour: opening in London on July 1, Berlin on July 2, then Stockholm on July 4, where ABBA will reform for the occasion.

Inspired by the songs and storytelling of the Swedish supergroup, and based on the hit musical, the Universal film is one of the hottest cinema releases this year.

The ruby red rug will require an extra special dry clean when the golden girl of the Oscars, Meryl Streep, touches down in Australia to promote Mamma Mia! the movie.

The big screen legend is jetting to Sydney as part of a star-studded press tour.

She will be joined by co-stars Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan and Amanda Seyfried in Sydney on July 8, before heading south for a gala premiere in Melbourne the following night.

The whistlestop visit is scheduled as the final stop on an amazing world tour that opens in London on July 1 and Berlin on July 2. When the crew reaches Stockholm by July 4, Swedish supergroup ABBA will re-form, hitting the stage for the occasion.

Based on the hit West End musical inspired by ABBA's songs, the film is tipped as one of the year's hottest releases in Australia, where the Swedish band remains popular.

Remembering previous media hype over ABBA "reunions" (such as the MAMMA MIA! 5th anniversary celebrations in London in April 2004) this seems like another media beat-up to gain attention for the upcoming MAMMA MIA! film. A "reunion" is unlikely, "hitting the stage" even more so. Many expect a repeat of the MAMMA MIA! Stockholm premiere in February 2005, where all four appeared, but never together. But we wait and see what happens on July 4 in Stockholm.

Any comments? Post them on the ABBA World blog.

UPDATE 5 JULY: as the world now knows, Björn, Benny, Agnetha and Frida all turned up at the MAMMA MIA! movie premiere in Stockholm. Agnetha and Frida appeared together on the red carpet with actress Meryl Streep, and the four of them gathered on the balcony of Hotell Rival alongside the film cast. However, the former ABBA members never grouped together, just the four of them.
