The Little Book of ABBAClaire WelchThe Little Book of ABBA is an apt title for this new book: it’s a small format – about 15 cm by 15 cm and 128 pages. Between its covers The Little Book of ABBA tells a concise version of the story of ABBA, from the gradual formation of the group in the early 1970s to the final years and beyond, right up to 2007. For such a “little” book, there is a surprising amount of detail within. The individual careers and lives of Benny, Björn, Agnetha and Anni-Frid, as well as their manager Stig Anderson, are also covered. Albums and major singles are discussed, and finally there are chapters on the ABBA revival of the 1990s, the musical Mamma Mia! and a probably unnecessary chapter on tribute act Björn Again. Photo fans will be pleased to see many uncommon or previously unpublished photographs. Author Claire Welch writes in relaxed, familiar style that is easy to read. Unfortunately, a couple of common errors creep in to the book, and there’s one shocking miscaptioning of a photograph. However, this doesn’t detract from the overall enjoyment of the book. If you’re looking for a highly detailed, “warts and all” version of the ABBA story, you’ll need to look elsewhere. For a quick, concise telling, The Little Book of ABBA is ideal, either as an introduction to ABBA for newer fans or as an abridged version of a familiar story, with many photos you haven’t seen before, for the long-term fan with everything. December 2007. Book kindly provided by Eventageous PR. |
