ABBA On The Web · June 2010

Many of the artists who collaborated with ABBA had long, fruitful careers away from the group, and have their own websites. This time let us take a look at a few of the musicians who worked with ABBA. Some of them are in Swedish only, but the non-Swedish speaker should still be able to find them interesting and informative.

Janne Schaffer  played guitar on ABBA’s records from almost the very beginning right through to the end. He also has a long and distinguished career as a solo artist and session musician. On his website you can find a full discography of his solo recordings plus as a member of various bands, stretching back to 1970. You can read (in Swedish) about the many artists he has worked with besides ABBA, including Björn J:son Lindh, Bob Marley, Toto and the Electric Banana Band. Janne still tours, solo and also with ABBA – The Show and, the Electric Banana Band – you can find concert dates up to the end of this year.

Lasse Wellander started playing guitar for ABBA in 1974 and continued through to 1982 and beyond, also playing on ABBA’s concert tours in 1977, 1979 and 1980, and even on Benny and Björn’s Chess concept album and concert tours in Sweden. Lasse has released several solo albums and also been a member of several duos, trios and groups – a full discography is on the site. His history details many other artists he has worked with. Lasse also has a production company, Very Wellander, providing studio recording and web design. You can also hear some demo recordings of songs he has written. Lasse’s website is in Swedish and English.

Mats Ronander joined the ABBA team as guitarist on the 1979 and 1980 concert tours. The site features his solo recording discography and information about several bands he has played in. Mats is now a member of the band Stockholm Stoner, singing and playing guitar and harmonica. The band’s site includes band member biographies, tour dates, song samples, video clips and more.

Lena Andersson was a teenage singing sensation signed to Polar Records in the early 1970s. Benny and Björn wrote and produced many songs for Lena in the years before ABBA and she later recorded Swedish and German versions of several ABBA hits. Lena was one of the backing singers on ABBA’s 1977 tour of Europe and Australia. On her website you can find her solo discography, biography, and information about her current music and paintings. Lena’s site is in Swedish and English.

Caj Höberg is a Swedish musician who played guitar for ABBA’s European concert tours and Scandinavian folkpark tours in 1974 and 1975. He also wrote the song ‘Shot Down In Action’ for Frida’s Something’s Going On album, which was rejected but can be heard in the documentary on the making of the album. Caj’s website details (in Swedish and English) his long career as musician and songwriter, and includes many demo recordings, including ‘Shot Down In Action’, though not sung by Frida. Most interestingly for ABBA fans there is a gallery of many unique photos from the 1974 and 1975 tours.

Claes af Geijerstam was sound engineer on ABBA’s concert tours in 1977 and 1979, and also co-hosted the variety show Lite Grand i Örat with Frida in 1981. Clabbe is a renowned musician, producer and DJ in Sweden.
