Meldrum’s Humdrum - ABBA here in March 1977!
By Ian Meldrum - TV Week 11 September 1976
In an exclusive interview I had with ABBA in Stockholm 2½ weeks ago the four
members, Anna, Frida, Benny and Björn, told me that they would definitely be
coming to Australia in March of 1977.
During the one hour interview, which was held on an old fishing boat on
Stockholm’s waterways, the group, who are currently topping the Oz charts with
Dancing Queen, appeared totally relaxed and very happy.
“We are looking forward very much,” said Anna, “to returning to Australia to
present some live concerts.”
“Most of the concerts,” added Benny, “will be outdoors, and it looks as if we
will be performing at the Myer Music Bowel in Melbourne, and at the Sydney
Showground.”
They will also be performing in Adelaide and Brisbane, and they are still
negotiating for a possible performance in Perth.
The Paul Dainty Corporation will be bringing them to Australia, and it is
thought that they will be doing a giant television spectacular, which could turn
out to be bigger than the Neil Diamond production.
“We are amazed”, said Frida, “at our popularity and sales in your country. It is
so hard to believe that a country so far away can put us at the top of the
charts time and time again.”
And if you think that ABBA’s popularity and appeal must eventually drop, then
don’t say anything, because I’ve heard some of their new material, and one
particular song, titled Money, Money, Money, which looks like being their
follow-up to Dancing Queen, is one of the best things they’ve recorded.
