Group has five singles in Top 40 in a week: ABBA outselling The Beatles
The Daily Telegraph 19 April 1976
Swedish pop group ABBA are now selling records more quickly that The Beatles
ever did.
This week they have broken all records by getting five singles into the Top
40 Chart at the same time.
And they’ve got a new song waiting to be released and it is tipped to be
their biggest hit yet.
On this week’s 2UW chart, ABBA have
Fernando (No.1), Ring, Ring
(No.3), Mamma Mia (No.22),
SOS (No.23) and
Rock Me (No.30).
An amazing part of the ABBA success story is that
Rock Me is the flip side of
I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do which
just left the charts.
30 Golds
So although thousands of people already have the single,
Rock Me is still winning enough new
ABBA fans to get up high on the charts.
At the last count, ABBA have notched up more than 30 gold albums in
Australia.
Leader of the group Björn Ulvaeus said yesterday he is thrilled with the
reaction to the group in Australia.
“We’re working on a batch of new songs right now and we hope to be in
Australia
in November,” he said.
