Your favourite ABBA releases - 2005

Back in October last year, I invited site visitors to comment on their favourite ABBA and related releases for 2005, plus what sort of releases they'd like to see in the future. Here are a selection of responses that cover every release or wish that you mentioned.

Graeme Dempsey from Vancouver, Canada writes of a very popular release: My favourite ABBA or related release for 2005 is the Frida box set.

Philipp Manderscheid from Germany writes of another popular release: Well, the most exciting release in 2005 for me was definitively ABBA – The Movie, I’ve never seen this film before and now since I got it in September I watched it over 10 times.

Philipp also writes of what he'd like to see in the future, a wish list that I'm sure many fans share: Hmm, I think for me it’s a release of Just Like That, just as for every other ABBA-Fan. But since this is nearly impossible I chose another one, a 5 CD-Box called “The Complete Live-recordings” with a double CD with a full concert from 1977, a double CD with a full concert from 1979 and another CD with the nine tracks from Dick Cavett Meets ABBA and maybe some other live-tv-performances. Another very nice thing would be a release of the most important ABBA-TV-Specials like The Best Of Musikladen; ABBADABBADOO; ABBA in Australia; ABBA in Poland; ABBA In Japan; ABBA In Switzerland; And the full Dick Cavett Meets ABBA. But as I said, I would be happy with a nice collection of ABBA’s live recordings which were indeed very good.

Russel Ham from the UK echoes part of Philipp's wish list: Apparently there are two versions of Just like that, with Agnetha on lead. One is in a minor key and one in a major. It would be BRILLIANT to hear both, but if we could just have the sax version as in the 80s box set, in its entirety, that would be FANTASTIC. I'll bet, that if the timing was right, and  a 'purpose' could be identified releasing this, it would undoubtedly be another number one for them. Come on Benny and Bjorn, 'give us a break, wont you?'

John Hunter from Australia writes of a release that had fans divided: My favourite this year would definitely be The Complete Studio Recordings box. It's brilliant to have all of ABBA's releases in one set, not scattered across multiple CDs. Great too with all the lyrics in one book, and the Timeline is very informative, with great unseen pics.

Curtis Hall from the USA writes with another common wish: I'm still waiting for a DVD with hours of live ABBA concert footage!! Pure concert footage that is, no documentary junk mixed in. Isn't every ABBA fan still waiting for this?

"ABBAmerica" writes with an unusual wish: A very nice and new release of anything of ABBA, would have to be a true story to the everyday life of the members. Maybe a movie or a made for television special, using actors and actresses to play the parts, showing everyday life and making of the music.

Rachael Tronell from Australia shares Philipp's favourite item: My favourite release was the updated version of ABBA the Movie on DVD and the box set with a new interview from Bjorn.

Rachael also has a long wish list for future releases: What I would like to be released is the rare songs in their complete form (or near enough to it) off ABBA Undeleted & maybe a release of Opus 10. I would also like more DVDs but with new footage not just videos, but things like TV performances, concerts and anything where you get to see them practicing etc. If Chess was recorded on tape that would also be good to release as a DVD. Basically anything other than the usual stuff. Something more for the true collector, other than those just getting into their music.

Ela from Hungary simply writes: ABBA come back!

ABBA - The Movie DVD 2005

ABBA - The Complete Studio Recordings

Some of you asked what my favourites were. Well, The Complete Studio Recordings box set and ABBA - The Movie on DVD were my definite highlights. And what would I like to see in the future? A new live album, including rarities such as I Am An A and I'm Still Alive (and maybe even a completer ecording of "The Girl With The Golden Hair"), and a Beatles Anthology-style release of alternate versions and unreleased songs.

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts. I don't know if your wish lists will ever come true, but I'm sure many, many ABBA fans around the world share your thoughts.
