A musicologist struck an interesting note at a conference in Southampton, England, by announcing to his colleagues that the music of saccharine Swedish group ABBA compared favourably with Beethoven. Philip Hauenstein said ABBA’s 1976 song Money, Money, Money was “brilliantly constructed” because it followed the same principles as the classics. And of another, more obscure, ABBA number Thank You For The Music, Mr Hauenstein opined: “It’s banal songs like that which help further mankind’s understanding of mankind.” As one observer later noted: “He seemed sober when he said it.”Transcribed for ABBA World
