Do not be confused. ABBA, the band, is doing nothing. ABBA, the neo-phenomenon, however, apparently cannot be stopped.

First, the band’s record company, Polydor Records, released a greatest-hits album, ABBA Gold. It sold nearly a million copies. Then, the Swedish band’s tunes were featured in the Australian films The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert and Muriel’s Wedding. Never mind that the band broke up in 1982 – its songs are club hits again.

“The one market they never had the most amazing success in was in the U.S.,” said Denis McNamara, a vice president at Polydor. “So, I know they are very happy about it. But at the same time, it is a strange situation because it’s for stuff they did 10 years ago.”

Reuniting, satin jumpsuits and all, is not in the future. But next Saturday, Irving Plaza in Manhattan will be the site of an ABBA screening party, which will feature ABBA videos, rare interview footage of the band and, of course, plenty of dancing.

“ABBA is everything that is right with the world,” said Chip Duckett, the party’s promoter. “Their resurgence is an example of the fresh, wholesome, trusting ways that replace the cynicism of the 1980’s. Besides, it’s got a great beat and you can dance to it.”Transcribed for ABBA World
