We celebrate the most astonishing and unforgettable screen moments of the past 50 years, and hail the stars and scenarios whose images still unspoilt across the flickering lamplight of our memory. So much for the preview. We hope you enjoy our feature presentation.
No. 1 – Kubrick Predicts 2001
No. 33 - Muriel and Rhonda do ABBA in Muriel’s Wedding.
Blizing Hibiscus Island resort’s talent quest with a lip-synched, loose-hipped version of ABBA’s Waterloo, gawky, unconfident Muriel (Toni Collette) and savvy Rhonda (Rachell Griffiths) sum up the heart and exuberance of Muriel’s Wedding (1994), and of the 1990s wave of quirky local movies. Collete, who was bursting from her satin jumpsuit thanks to 19kg she piled on (and later lost) for the role, has admitted she laughs “hysterically” at the scene. “People say; Toni, that wasn’t you in that white suit!?” No, it was Muriel.
No. 57 – Drag in Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert.
One of the 1994 Oz flick’s most memorable delights is Guy Pearce in drag atop the bus as it cruises the Outback. But it almost didn’t happen. Though under time and cost pressure to cut the sequence, director Stephan Elliot stood his ground: “You can’t have this absurdist moment with a guy singing an opera on a giant stiletto with 300-foot silver lamé wings. It’s an image that will not go away.” Transcribed for ABBA World
